Stefanos Kasselakis Elected as Head of Syriza: An Unexpected Victory for Greece’s Opposition Party

Having announced his candidacy less than a month ago, Stefanos Kasselakis was elected on Sunday September 24 as head of Syriza, Greece’s leading opposition party, at the end of a campaign which took the political sphere by surprise. This 35-year-old businessman, who was still largely unknown to the Greek population a few weeks ago, won by gathering more than 56% of the votes, in the second round of an internal election which began the week last, as reported RFI.

Nicknamed the “golden boy” by part of the country’s media class due in particular to his five-year stint in the American investment bank Goldman Sachs as a trader, Stefanos Kasselakis faced Effie Achtsioglou in the second round, the Former Labor Minister of Alexis Tsipras.

New start. This internal election follows the departure of the former Greek Prime Minister from the head of Syriza. Alexis Tsipras announced last June that he was leaving his position as leader of the left party, a few days after the disappointing results of Syriza in the legislative elections. The party only received 17.83% of the vote, compared to 40.56% for the conservative New Democracy party of Prime Minister Kyriákos Mitsotákis.

Stefanos Kasselakis, who left Greece for the United States at the age of 14 and was still living in Miami most recently, as noted Le Figaro, must now prove to the members of his party that they made the right choice. Having never been elected to an electoral mandate in Greece, the new leader of Syriza reacted to his victory by thanking the “150,000 members” of the party who came to the polls. “They are proof that Syriza is still there, that the party is here to last and that from now on, Syriza will win! », promised the man who also becomes the first openly gay man to take the leadership of a Greek political party.
