VIVA – Indonesian National Team coach, Shin Tae-yong has selected 50 players to be registered for the 2023 Asian Cup. One of them is a naturalized player belonging to Borneo FC, Stefano Lilipaly.
This was confirmed by the manager of the Indonesian National Team, Sumardji, Monday 11 December 2023. “Yes, Lilipaly has also been registered by the Indonesian National Team for the 2023 Asian Cup,” said Sumardji when contacted by media crew.
Lilipaly is indeed one of the prominent Indonesian players in Liga 1 2023/2024. He became the most fertile Indonesian player with nine goals in 22 matches.
Apart from being adept at scoring goals, Lilipaly leads the list of highest assist scorers overall. The former Bali United player collected nine assists, the same as Persis Solo midfielder, Alexis Messidoro.
However, his achievements in the competition were not enough to earn him a place in Shin Tae-yong’s Indonesian National Team squad. In several matches, naturalized players were often not brought by Shin Tae-yong.
Shin Tae-yong did not call him in the last four matches of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in the Asian Zone. The last time Stefano Lilipaly appeared for the Indonesian National Team was during a trial against Turkmenistan on September 8 2023. However, he only played 19 minutes in the Garuda Squad’s 1-0 win.
On the other hand, it is not certain that Lilipaly will be brought to the 2023 Asian Cup. This is because each team is only allowed to bring 23 players. This means that there will be 27 players eliminated later.
