When the “Greek Wine” sounds from the CD and Stefan Malzew sits at the piano to explain to us what thirds and sixths are, we know that the former General Music Director (GMD) of the Philharmonie Neubrandenburg is in his element. Thirds and sixths belong to the intervals of music, they also determine whether a song sounds harmonious. Malzew exchanges a few thirds from the hit by Udo Jürgens and the hit sounds a lot wrong.
In the video, Malzew explains why to the listener and viewer on the computer. This film is entitled “Sound of Tones”, Part 2, Chapter 13, and the numbers alone make it clear that he is developing an extremely detailed, digitally processed compendium of music lessons – or, better said, of entertaining music (theory) teaching.
His fans remember the concert nights
“If you simply enjoy listening to music, studying this course will bring you closer to your favorite music. You will be able to listen deeper into them, discover more magical details and begin to hear understandingly, ”promises Malzew on the website of the SimplyMusic Academy.
His fans from 14 years of the Philharmonie should remember the concert nights well. Four to five hours of classical music in the evening, seasoned with presentations, interviews and musical experiments. He opened ears and eyes to the world of music. In this sense, the EinfachMusik-Akademie is a continuation of the concert nights online.
Malzew also wrote the music for the elephant pup
The conductor and composer lives and works in Bad Salzschlirf, Hesse. Since his engagement as GMD in Neubrandenburg, which lasted until 2016, he has been working as an independent conductor, composer and musician. Most recently he composed the music for the children’s book “Der Elefantenpups. Traveling with the Zoo Orchestra ”, published by Nordkurier-Buchverlag mecklenbook.
At heart, Malzew has always been a music mediator, now as part of the EinfachMusik-Akademie, which publishes its offer exclusively on the website – in videos, texts, a blog and podcasts. A large part of the offer is freely available, such as the blog, the podcasts and Wiki music, a dictionary of musical terms.
The course offer, on the other hand, is hidden behind a payment barrier and is chargeable. If interested parties are part of a teaching professional group, i.e. teachers, trainers or trainers, there is a discount, says Malzew.
When the firefighter pulls out his siren
Time and again he brings experts in front of the camera for his individual “music lessons” in the course. For example, when it comes to explaining different pitches, Malzew puts on a fire helmet and interviews his comrade Christian Bornträger, who is howling an old hand-operated siren.
Then Malzew explains in his recording studio how the sound of the siren moved from the very bottom to the top. But that is only a section in Chapter 1. The following sections deal with the duration of the tone, tone color, volume and tone color, among other things. The whole thing looks anything but dust-dry like out of a textbook on music theory, but relaxed and funny but still well-founded. “The offer is intended for everyone who wants to understand what music is actually, how it works,” says Malzew.
Music theory should always be fun
That can be the classical concert-goer as well as the listener of serious and light music on the home system. But also people who practice music as a hobby and are looking for deeper insights into theory. “We want to make sure that it’s always fun,” says Malzew.
He even succeeds in explaining the tritone, a musical interval that spans three whole tones. To accentuate the term with a piece of music, Malzew plays “Summertime” by George Gershwin in a triple line-up: Malzew on piano, Malzew on clarinet and Malzew on vibraphone.
Further parts on rhythm and notation
If you follow the contributions in the first part “The Sound of Tones” non-stop, you would spend more than a day in front of the computer. Malzew recommends consuming it in bites. In any case, you quickly notice that the platform has been “worked at full speed for six months”. Malzew and his colleague were supported by a professional video team and a marketing agency.
For the first part, more are to be added soon, including on the topics of rhythm and musical notation.
