Stefan Küng slid away on a cobblestone section in the final of the GP de Denain and took almost the entire group of favorites with him. Arnaud De Lie also fell and saw his chance of victory go up in smoke. “Küng fell for me, but it certainly wasn’t his fault,” he said Bull of Lescheret afterwards against The newspapaer.
“It was also a dangerous race this year. Fortunately, I didn’t hurt myself,” said De Lie, who managed to finish fourth in the French cobblestone race. In the sprint for third place, behind the leading escapees Jannik Steimle and Ceriel Desal, he still had to let Dries Van Gestel in front. He just fell off the podium.
“I am happy with my fourth place,” De Lie said nevertheless. It was a boost for the Lotto Dstny rider, who crashed in Le Samyn and suffered so much from it in Paris-Nice that he gave up after three stages. “I haven’t recovered 100% yet, but I’m happy with the feeling after a difficult Paris-Nice. I am motivated for my next goal. After Paris-Nice I did nothing but rest, rest, rest. That is the key.”
