Former Swiss sprinter Stefan Burkart dies at the age of 62 after a serious illness, according to several media reports.

He took part in two Olympic Games (1992, 1996), one World and three European Championships and held national records over 100 (10.32) and 60 m (6.61). In 2002, at the age of 44, he won an SM medal in third place over 60 m.

Burkart was also successful as a bob pusher and as a trainer in athletics and in the ice channel scene. He promoted Olympic medalists like Martin Annen, Gregor Stähli and Alex Baumann. Burkart’s wife Helen (née Barnett) finished 4th at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles with the British 4×400 m relay. Their son Nishan is a talented soccer player. The 20-year-old striker was trained at Manchester United and now hopes to make the leap into the Bundesliga at Freiburg.
