Stef Bef fires off the first single: watch the video clip here

Stef Bef, who was in Katastroof until a few months ago, takes a completely different approach musically. As Steven & De Tong, he launches an anti-war song on Armistice Day with a video clip under his own management.

Steven Boers left the Antwerp band Katastroof a few months ago. Stef Bef became Stef & De Tong after his departure. Since then, the Antwerp artist has not been sitting still. Together with comedian Els de Schepper he wrote a book and a theater show, he sold his paintings and went into the studio for a first single. ‘Mine War’ denounces the violence of war.

“Initially I wanted a different song as a first feat of arms”, Boers confesses. “A song that is more in the genre of my new band Stef & De Tong. When I sang an acoustic version of ‘Mine War’ during solo performances, the reactions were very positive. November 11 seemed like the ideal date to launch the song.”

An anti-war song from the mouth of someone who until recently sang mainly drinking songs? “We also wrote much more serious ballads for Katastroof. The biggest difference with my earlier work is in the music. The orchestral accompaniment is meticulously constructed and leads the song to a climax. When I play ‘Mine War’ live, it sounds like something from Bob Dylan. Before recording I wanted to make it sound bigger. I worked with producer Steven Jacobs and master guitarist David Piedfort of the Cavern Studio. They sense exactly which parties I want to hear where. I asked David to keep ‘Brothers in Arms’ by Dire Straits in mind during the guitar solos.”

The song has a music video. “Fully shot in-house. It’s the first time I’ve done that and the result is very promising. I already got a request to shoot a clip for a notorious band that recently had to deal with some personnel changes (laughs).”
