STC Education Union Calls for Teacher Walkout in Corsican Academy – January 19, 2024

The STC Education union calls on all teachers of the Corsican academy to a walkout (work interruption of less than one hour) in the morning of this Friday January 19, 2024.

This action is intended as a protest against the placement in police custody of a teacher from Giraud college in Bastia.

Tuesday January 16, around noon, a professor from this establishment was summoned to the Bastia police station. As soon as he arrived, the police notified him of his placement in police custody. A measure decided as part of an investigation into “aggravated violence”, opened by the prosecution in January 2022 following a complaint filed by a couple of parents of students.

A measure which will be lifted after four hours due to its incompatibility with the state of health of the person in custody, after he has been examined by a doctor.

“For a teacher to be summoned to the police station to be interviewed, that does not pose a problem to us, underlines Jean-Pierre Luciani, the national secretary of the STC Education. But for him to be placed in police custody in this case is unacceptable. Likewise, we do not accept that this colleague was accompanied to the doctor in handcuffs, as if he were a thug and not a teacher.”

A first walkout in December

On Wednesday January 17, the professor was again summoned to the police station where he was interviewed under the free hearing regime. “It was ordered that the investigation continue so that witnesses can be interviewed and that we can then determine the direction that this case will take,” indicates Jean-Philippe Navarre, the public prosecutor of Bastia.
