Stavanger Oilers player Tommy Kristiansen was killed in house fire – VG

RESCUE MAN: Stavanger Oilers player Tommy Kristiansen was in the right place at the right time.

Stavanger Oilers player Tommy Kristiansen (33) was walking home from the hockey locker room when he suddenly saw a house on fire.

Published:

– You get scared. I thought I had to get everyone out. Go a little bit your way, at least when there are children living in the building. I am a father myself, Tommy Kristiansen tells VG.

On Sunday evening, the 33-year-old witnessed a house fire in his own neighborhood.

The hockey player, known for his tough playing style, didn’t think twice and went straight into the building.

There are four apartments in the building where the fire broke out.

I went for a walk with the dog

Sør-Vest police reported the fire on Twitter at 8.55pm.

Not long after, they wrote that a passing man had seen the fire and ran into the building.

This man was Kristiansen.

He says he took his dog Lola for a walk in the nearby Oilers locker room.

– When I come back, I see that it is burning and there is a lot of smoke. The first thing I think is that I have to run, says Kristiansen.

Fire extinguisher recovered

Kristiansen says the first thing he did was evacuate a woman, before evacuating the rest of the building.

He says that among other things he was in and taken out of a family with children, but does not remember exactly how many housing units he visited.

The hockey player says he first emptied a fire extinguisher, then ran home and got another one.

– It caught fire behind the stove and was about to spread. I was in the right place at the right time – two minutes later and there was going to be a full fire, says Kristiansen.

How is your form now?

– All right. As long as I get checked and maybe get some oxygen, I’ll be fine. This is completely normal procedure, says Kristiansen, who is in the ER when VG talks to him on Sunday night.

– It’s rock solid

The head of operations in the Sør-West police district, Helene Strand, confirms that it was Kristiansen who entered the building.

– It’s fantastic, simply. Courageous and energetic, she tells VG.

When asked what the situation might have looked like had it not been for Kristiansen’s efforts, Strand replies that he asked the firefighters the same.

– It is not good to say, but since the resident had not discovered it himself, there is reason to believe that the fire could have spread even further. It had already spread to the ventilation system, so it could have spread quickly, he says.

Eleven were evacuated

There are four apartments, with a common main entrance, in the building where the fire broke out.

A total of eleven residents were evacuated.

According to police, Kristiansen was the only one sent to the emergency room for a checkup.

Firefighters are now working on airing and extinguishing the scene.
