Staufen : Regional Council Freiburg: Construction of the Staufen bypass can continue – Ministry of Transport releases funds for the second construction phase – Regional President Schäfer: “Staaufen is improving quality of life.”

The construction of the Staufen bypass (L 123, Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district) can continue. As reported by the Regional Council of Freiburg (RP), the Ministry of Transport in Stuttgart has released the funds for the second construction phase in the amount of 4.9 million euros. The RP can now advertise the project. The work can then probably begin in the summer with the construction of the bicycle underpass on Grunerner Straße. The RP expects the project to be completed by the end of 2023.

The first, 2.7-kilometre-long section of the bypass south-west of Staufen had already been opened in November 2020. At the end of the first construction phase, the renovation of the Neumagen Bridge was completed last December. The second construction phase covers 1.4 kilometers and will lead from the Grunerner Straße to the outskirts in the direction of Münstertal.

“We are very pleased that the bypass can now be completed. As a result, the city of Staufen will significantly improve its quality of life in the foreseeable future. The air in the city center will be cleaner and traffic noise will decrease. Cyclists and pedestrians will be safer on the road in the future,” said District President Bärbel Schäfer. The city center will be relieved of through traffic by up to 80 percent thanks to the bypass. The updated traffic forecast has shown that a full local bypass will noticeably increase the already positive effects of the partial bypass.

After the planning approval in January 2014, the construction of the Staufen bypass was divided into two construction phases as a result of a court settlement. The basis for the release of the funds for the second construction phase by the Ministry of Transport was, among other things, the updated traffic forecast that the RP published on its website under “Aktuelles”: www.rp-freiburg.de

The construction of the 4.1 km long bypass is part of the general traffic plan of the state of Baden-Württemberg. The total costs are around 13 million euros.
