Status of a former convict, Rizieq Shihab’s sentence of punishment in the heavier crowd case page all

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Public Prosecutor (JPU) asks the Judiciary to impose a heavier sentence on the former leader of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) Rizieq Shihab in case of crowds violating Covid-19 health protocols.

The prosecutor demanded that the defendant Rizieq be sentenced to 2 years imprisonment and the related detention period was cut the crowd case in Petamburan, Central Jakarta.

Meanwhile, 5 other defendants in the same case were sentenced to 1 year and 6 months imprisonment with the term of their detention cut. They are Haris Ubaidillah, Ahmad Sabri Lubis, Ali Alwi Alatas, Idrus Al-Habsyi, and Maman Suryadi.

In reading the charges, the prosecutor explained the consequences of the activity which took place in November 2020, in which an estimated 10,000 invited guests packed Petamburan without implementing health protocols.

In the event, Rizieq invited many guests to come to the wedding of his daughter which was accompanied by the celebration of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

The prosecutor stated that this activity contributed to the increase in Covid-19 cases in Petamburan.

It’s burdensome

Rizieq is being asked for a longer prison term, given his status as a former convict.

Rizieq has been sentenced to prison twice, namely in 2003 and 2008.

“It is a serious matter, the first defendant was sentenced twice in case article 160 of the Criminal Code in 2003, and case 170 of the Criminal Code in 2008,” said the Public Prosecutor in the East Jakarta District Court, Monday (17/5/2021).

Case 160 of the Criminal Code in question is the decision of the Central Jakarta District Court in the Rizieq case inciting residents to destroy a number of entertainment venues in 2002.

In that case, Rizieq was sentenced to seven months in prison.

Meanwhile, the 170 KUHP case is the riot at Monas, Central Jakarta, which resulted in Rizieq receiving a sentence of 1.5 years in prison.

Rizieq was found guilty of advocating violence against people or property, as well as mobilizing attacks and omitting acts of violence.
