Statuettes in the historic center of San Salvador have been threatened with being evicted by the Corps of Metropolitan Agents (CAM) even though they have permits.

“What they told us was that we could not work until we had a meeting with them (mayor), but we already have the permits, we have a card that has been given to us since 2017; and the year before last (2022) they gave us another card that was going to last in the process where Mario Durán (current mayor of San Salvador) was,” one of the representatives of this artists’ union told Diario Co Latino.

However, in recent days, CAM agents “have come to bother us, make us uncomfortable and harass us; They are sent by the mayor’s office,” said one of those affected.

Since the Revitalization Plan of the Historic Center has been implemented, the statuettes assure that there is a person in the capital commune who is responsible for ensuring that they do not carry out their work in the central squares of the Center.

“A few days ago (March 30) we had (a) problem, they called the police and the CAM, and it was a very absurd thing, they wanted to evict us, they told us to leave because we did not have the permits, and we showed them the card that we are accredited and they said no,” said one of the affected artists.

For this reason, this April 4 they had a meeting with a mayoral delegate “and a police officer, where the statutes stated that they did not cause problems. However, those from the commune have put various obstacles in their way to carry out their work, since they ask them to sign a document that states “arbitrary things towards art”, for example, “if we commit some disorder, we don’t know what kind.” of disorder because it is not specified there, so, they say that they are going to arrest us.”

The statuettes assure that they have worked for years at the center and have never caused any disorders. According to what the artists told Diario Co Latino, there are 10 people affected, who hope that they will reach an agreement to be able to support themselves in their homes.
