Statue of Liberty’s “little sister” has arrived in New York

A scaled-down Statue of Liberty has arrived in New York. The work, which will then stay in Washington, symbolizes the strength of Franco-American relations.

One hundred and thirty-five years after the inauguration of the Statue of Liberty in New York, a second Lady Liberty was sent to the United States from France. But this time, it is a loan in question.

The replica, which measures 2.83 meters tall, was erected on Thursday on Ellis Island, in New York Harbor.

Made of bronze and made from the original model plaster cast of the Statue of Liberty Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, the work was loaned by the Paris Museum of Arts and Crafts in the United States for a period of ten years, in order to consolidate Franco-American friendship.

“A new era”

Lady Liberty’s little sister will remain on display on Ellis Island (the island through which would-be immigrants passed between 1892 and 1924) until July the 5th. The public will therefore be able to come and admire it on the occasion of the American National Day, July 4th.

“It is a symbol of the friendship between the French and American peoples, but it is also a reminder of the importance of the message of freedom and enlightenment of the world, which is the name of the statue,” said Philippe Étienne, Ambassador of France to the United States, during an inauguration ceremony. “A new era in relations between France and the United States is going to open, that’s what we want,” he added.

The replica will then be transferred to Washington and installed in the property ofFrench Embassy.

A long-standing “friendship”

Franco-American relations date back to the 16the century. There are already traces of French presence in the New World in 1523, when the explorer Giovanni de Verrazano, who sailed under the orders of François 1is, discovered the Hudson River and Manhattan. He then baptized New York “Terre D’Angoulême”.

Later, at 17e century, the city was nicknamed “Little France due to the growing presence of French immigrants in New York.

Some historical dates like that of 1803, date on which Napoleon sold Louisiana to the Americans, also explain the French presence in the United States.

A diplomatic tool

The French presence on the other side of the Atlantic was also reinforced after the World War II. Strangely, the conflicts had optimized the visibility of French culture, and the services in charge of French propaganda were established permanently.

During the year 1947 and the entry into the Cold War, cultural policy was moreover integrated into a vast program of information intended for Americans in the service of a common mission: to make known the true face of France and to fight against unfriendly currents.
