Whether this has to do with corona, the CBS does not dare to say, nor whether this increase will continue “It is not yet the time for the manufacturer of the well-known mice to drastically increase production,” explains a spokeswoman .
There are also two sides to corona when it comes to having children, according to Statistics Netherlands. In times of uncertainty, important decisions are often postponed, but on the other hand, everyone works from home a lot and it is easier to keep an eye on a baby.
Demographers have been warning for some time that the Dutch have too few children to keep the level of prosperity high in the long term.
Figures fell sharply
Statistics Netherlands itself does take into account a future increase in the number of births, but that has nothing to do with corona. It will be more of a catch-up operation. Until 2010, more than 180,000 children were born annually in the Netherlands. As of 2017, there are fewer than 170,000 per year. In 2020 there were 168,000. Women younger than thirty in particular had relatively fewer children. “It is expected that these women will still start having children in the coming years and that the number of births will rise again,” according to the CBS.
Incidentally, there are always differences in the number of births per month, because there are more or fewer weekends in the month in one year than in another. Usually fewer children are born on the weekend than during the week.
