A Staten Island Family’s Hope: Can Stem Cell Research Help 5-Year-Old Ali Rose Recover from a Devastating Brain Injury?
Five-year-old Ali Rose Modica, once a cheerful pre-schooler who adored being a big sister, now faces a challenging recovery after a sudden illness left her with a debilitating brain injury. The ordeal began in January when Ali Rose, who had no prior medical conditions, was rushed to the Jersey Shore Medical Center. "阿里玫瑰 "Rose was placed on a ventilator and had to be transported to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
"Doctors gave her a 65% chance of survival," her parents, Dalainna and Joseph Modica, recounted. Ali Rose’s condition, attributed to complications stemming from the influenza virus, deteriorated rapidly.
The need for a helicopter transfer to Philadelphia was delayed due to a snowstorm, forcing a desperate ground transportation. Precious time was lost. Upon arriving in Philadelphia,Ali Rose suffered cardiac arrest — marking a turning point in her young life.
Despite the grim diagnosis, Ali Rose defied the odds. After being unconscious and reliant on an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine, her vital organs miraculously regained full functionality. However, the trauma inflicted by the cardiac arrest left her with a hypoxic brain injury, impacting her motor skills, speech, and daily functions.
"Ali’s parents had the foresight to save their daughter’s cord blood at birth,” explained a family spokesperson. Now, they are painstakingly searching for medical professionals specializing in stem cell research for non-traumatic brain injuries in hopes of unlocking a path to recovery for Ali Rose.
The Modica family is clinging to optimism, desperately seeking any information on potential treatments and grant programs to fund Ali Rose’s rehabilitation. They are also urging the Staten Island community and beyond to advocate for awareness surrounding this condition to support other families facing similar struggles.
