NEW YORK – Three teenagers were killed and several others were injured in a fiery crash that wrecked a vehicle on Staten Island Sunday night, authorities said.
The victims, two girls ages 15 and 16 along with a 15-year-old boy, were riding in a red Mustang that was being driven by another 16-year-old boy when the car and a black SUV collided at Hyland Boulevard and Richard Avenue shortly before 9 p.m. , according to the police.
The 16-year-old driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. He is expected to survive, as is the person behind the wheel of the black van. That individual was also taken to a hospital, although he was said to have less serious injuries.
The identities of the victims were not immediately released, nor was a possible cause of the crash shared until early Monday.
Driving laws in the state of New York state that anyone holding a junior learner’s permit, which would apply to drivers under the age of 17, must be accompanied by a guardian or driving instructor between the hours of 5 a.m. and 9 p.m.
The investigation is ongoing.
