Statement from the Department of Antiquities and Museums regarding the Kyrenia Antique Harbor project

Here is the description:

Our project was put out to tender on September 24, 2022 and work started with the signing of the contract in December.
Due to the fact that the region is a 1st degree protection area, all the works carried out in the region are carried out by our department, both the excavation works on the ground and the restoration works on the facades of the buildings, together with the control of our technical personnel.
In this context, during the preparation phase of the project and before the tender, the opinion of the senior managers was taken for the Planning approval, and the technical personnel working on the project at that time, when the project prepared by the Department of Antiquities and Museums did not need to be submitted to the Supreme Council of Monuments, was informed and the tender was made.

Since December 2022, the project has been reported to the press and social media at different times, and the train tracks found during the excavation in February have been in the media for days, and accordingly, the media has been informed about the project at different times. Despite the obligatory changes made in the project with the findings found during the excavation, no institutions, organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations have reacted.

While the project was continuing, with the completion of 90% of the infrastructure, the floor was laid. When the flooring was started, the works that had been going on for months attracted the attention of some segments with the news on the social media, and the Supreme Council of Monuments conveyed the opinion that the flooring was not appropriate.

When the project was presented to the High Council of Monuments, the board made a decision for a different flooring. In this context, our department prepared a new project in accordance with the decision taken in a short time and submitted it to the Board, and it was deemed appropriate to implement it with the board decision dated 26.06.2023. Planning approval of the project was obtained and it was made ready for implementation by obtaining the approval of the High Council of Monuments.

At the current stage, the concrete poured in accordance with the decision will be removed and removed from the area, and it will be completed by laying on the concrete parquet floor with compacted sand, as well as laying with pebbles at the places specified in the project on the building facades and on the quay side.

The project has been given to the contractor and will be completed quickly to avoid further grievances and our Antique Port will begin to serve our people with its new face.
