Statement by U.S. Embassy on Deadly Attack on MINUSCA
Bangui, December 26, 2020 – The United States Embassy in the Central African Republic (CAR) is deeply saddened by the news of the death of three Burundian peacekeepers, killed in the course of their work protecting Central African civilians in Dékoa, Kémo prefecture, December 25, 2020 We strongly condemn this murderous attack on the United Nations multidimensional integrated stabilization mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), which also injured two other Burundian peacekeepers.
We deplore the recent rise in violence in the Central African Republic, which has claimed the lives of innocent people, displaced thousands of civilians and threatened vital humanitarian action that must be allowed to continue. We call on all parties to cease hostilities and to ensure that the Central African people can exercise their right to participate in peaceful elections on December 27.
To the families of the victims we offer our sincere condolences, and we wish a speedy and full recovery to the injured. The United States Embassy reaffirms its support for MINUSCA and the courageous peacekeepers who risk their lives in order to reassure peace in CAR. We demand that the perpetrators of this crime be apprehended and that justice be served.
