Statement by the Embassy of the United States of February 9, 2021

We have seen a decree published very late on February 8, retiring three judges of the Court of Cassation. We are deeply concerned about any action that risks undermining Haitian democratic institutions. The decree is being examined by international bodies to determine whether it is in conformity with the Constitution and Haitian laws. In the meantime, all political actors should concentrate on restoring to the Haitian people their right to choose their legislators by the organization of legislative elections which are already late, as soon as technically possible, then by the organization of presidential elections shortly after.

We saw an arrest issued at the end of February 8 that gave three judges of the Court of Cassation their retirement. We are deeply concerned about actions that risk disrupting democratic institutions in Haiti. For now intense international will examine this arrest to see if it complies with the constitution and Haitian law. During this time, all political actors should focus on giving the Haitian people their right to elect their legislators through the already late legislative elections, as far as technically possible and through the organization of presidential elections soon after.
