State protection determined: Unknowns ignite at the Reichstag

Arson attack on Germany’s political heart: One or more strangers tried to set fire to the Berlin Reichstag last night. The perpetrator (s) had specifically selected a window on the east side.

Fire at the Reichstag: Such a deployment report is anything but common for the Berlin fire brigade. An arson attack on the building with the distinctive dome in the center of the capital failed last night.

The fire was discovered shortly after midnight. The perpetrator (s) probably chose the location for the arson attack carefully: a chipboard is currently replacing a window on the east side of Friedrich-Ebert-Platz. As the “BZ” reports, the plate was poured with a liquid and set on fire.

Federal police officers were able to prevent the flames from spreading and extinguish the fire quickly before the fire service was even on site. According to a fire department spokesman, the mission, to which 50 rescue workers were initially called, ended after around 30 minutes. Nobody got hurt. Since the Reichstag building is under special protection, more firefighters were initially called in than were ultimately necessary, the spokesman continued.

The perpetrator (s) were able to escape undetected. It is still unclear whether they were filmed by surveillance cameras. The search for the perpetrators is ongoing. The state security determined.
