State of emergency in New York for monkey pox, Spain reports second death

The US state of New York has declared a state of emergency due to the rapidly increasing number of monkeypox infections. Yesterday the counter in this state stood at 1383 infections. According to Governor Kathy Hochul, that is a quarter of the total number of infections in the United States.

The state of emergency, which will last at least until August 28, makes it possible to vaccinate more groups of people against monkey pox. Pharmacists, midwives and emergency services employees are now also eligible for vaccination against the virus. The registration of cases of illness will also be improved, so that health authorities can react more quickly.

Monkeypox direct effect on public health

New York declared monkey pox a direct public health threat on Thursday. The city of San Francisco, where 261 infections have been counted, has also already introduced a state of emergency. More than 4,900 cases of monkeypox have been reported in the United States, according to the CDC federal health service.

The World Health Organization declared monkey pox a global health crisis last week. Those who contract the virus can suffer from fever, headache, muscle aches and general malaise. After a few days, a rash with blisters appears on the skin. Usually people don’t get very sick from an infection.

Spain reports second death

And the virus is also spreading closer to home. A second death from the disease has now been reported in Spain. “Of the 3750 patients, 120 have been hospitalized and two have died,” the Spanish Ministry of Health reported.

Most infected people in Spain are male, the average age is 37 years. Shortly before Spain, Brazil also reported its first death from the monkeypox virus. That was the first death outside Africa in the current outbreak that started in Europe just under two months ago.

In the Netherlands, 878 people have now contracted the virus, RIVM reports. Most positive tests are in the Amsterdam and The Hague regions.
