State of emergency in New York City: don’t hit the road

A travel ban has been announced in New York City with immediate effect due to the extreme winter weather that is plaguing the region. Except for the emergency services and taxis, all traffic has to be off the road. Parts of the metro will also be closed; in any case all above-ground parts. Buses stopped running before.

More than half a meter of snow has already fallen in large parts of the American east coast. Meteorologists expect that the same amount will be added.

Police will make sure everyone follows the ban, says New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. He said everyone should heed the warning and go home immediately. Authorities previously wanted theaters to cancel their performances and restaurants to close.
