A state of emergency was declared and evacuations ordered in parts of Russia’s Far East today after heavy rains flooded villages following Typhoon Hanun, local authorities said, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
After lashing southern Japan, Hanun weakened to a tropical depression as it crossed from South to North Korea yesterday. In the Russian Far East, the easternmost region of Russia and the Asian continent, access to 32 villages was cut off by this morning, 543 houses and large stretches of roads were flooded, Primorsky Krai authorities said.
Evacuations are underway in the cities of Ussuriysk and Spask-Dalny in Primorye, a region whose administrative center is the port of Vladivostok. “The water is rising rapidly in the riverside parts of the city (Spask-Dalni),” the authorities of the Primorsky Krai announced on the Telegram social network. Te posted a video showing the damage.
The Spasovka and Kuleshovka rivers cross the territory of Spask-Dalny, a town with a population of just over 44,000 people. Parts of Ussuriysk, a city of more than 150,000 people located about 100 km north of Vladivostok, where a dam built to contain flooding broke, were also evacuated.
A state of emergency has been declared in nine municipalities in the Primorsky Krai. In some areas of the region, by the end of the week, precipitation that is twice the normal amount for the month is forecast.
