Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency in Orange County, northwest of New York City, and in Ontario County, in the center of the state, noting that up to 200mm of rain had created “life-threatening conditions due to flash flooding”.
“We are approaching a tipping point in this weather event,” Ms. Hochul said.
Sunday evening July 9, more than 12,000 customers had been without electricity, according to his office, the heavy rains having washed away roads and blocked people in their cars or their houses.
As of 8 p.m. (0000 GMT), highways were closed in at least five counties in the state, including Westchester, which is just north of New York and borders the Hudson River.
The governor’s office said the state should expect further storms Monday, July 10.
