They declared a state of emergency in Berkovitsa. A tidal wave following torrential rains caused serious damage, and shortly after midnight the state announced emergency measures.

By order of Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov, the Bulgarian army joined the efforts to overcome the flood in Berkovitsa. There are no reports of injured people.

There are cars blown away, houses and streets destroyed. The city’s hospital and kindergarten, as well as many homes, were flooded.

Victims said the water came in seconds and flooded their homes. They also say that they measured up to 70 cm of water in the rooms on the first floors.

People have had a sleepless night.

“There are no people in distress, today we have to visit about 40 drainage signals”, said the mayor of the city, Dimitranka Kamenova. According to her, the infrastructure was totally destroyed.

A commission will begin describing the damage.
