State Department Develops AI-Aggregator to Detect Russian Disinformation Regarding Ukraine

The State Department has developed an aggregator with artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect “Russian disinformation,” Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said. According to him, this disinformation concerns the military operation in Ukraine. He did not provide any examples.

Mr. Blinken said that the US is “working to solve the massive problem of misinformation on the Internet.” “The State Department has developed an AI-enabled online content aggregator for Ukraine to collect verifiable Russian disinformation and then share it with partners around the world… We are working with partners and academia to reliably identify fake text generated by Russian chatbots.” – said the Secretary of State, speaking at the non-governmental organization Freedom House (TASS quote).

In March, the US cited Russia, China and Iran as threats in its updated cybersecurity strategy. According to the American authorities, the Russian leadership uses its cyber capabilities to “destabilize and interfere in the internal politics of democratic states around the world.” As an example, hacker attacks using the NotPetya virus were cited, as well as cyber attacks that were carried out in parallel with the development of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022.
