State Budget Surplus and Deficit Rankings in EU Countries – Second Quarter 2021

According to them, our state budget surplus in April-June was 0.1% of GDP.

There was still a budget surplus in Denmark (+2.8% of GDP), Ireland (+2.4%), Portugal (+2.3%) and the Netherlands (+0.2%).

Meanwhile, the biggest deficits in the second quarter were in Hungary (-6.6% of GDP), Romania (-6.3%), Slovakia (-4.8%) and France (-4.6%).

Both in Lithuania and Estonia in April-June, the state budget deficit in relation to GDP was 0.7%.

Compared to the first quarter, the state budget balance in the second quarter improved in 13 countries for which data are available, while in 11 countries the balance worsened.

The biggest improvement in the state budget balance was experienced in Hungary (+3.6 percentage points), Latvia (+2.8 percentage points), Estonia (+1.7 percentage points) and Austria (+one percentage point). In Lithuania, the state budget balance improved by 0.2 percentage points.

However, the situation of the budget balance deteriorated most rapidly in Spain (-2.2 percentage points), Poland (-two percentage points), as well as in Denmark and Slovakia (-0.7 percentage points in both countries).

In the second quarter, the seasonally adjusted general government deficit in the EU was 3.2% of GDP, while in the euro area it was 3.3% of GDP. In the first three months of this year, it was 3.1% in the EU, while the deficit in the eurozone was also 3.3%.
