Traditionally, the Treasury collects money from private individuals with the government bond to finance the government debt. In the past, government bonds were issued four times a year.
The success of the vouchers was mainly determined by the difference between the interest offered and the interest on savings accounts. In 2011, for example, a government bond with 4 percent interest was a great success. Then Prime Minister Yves Leterme had called on the Belgians to buy state bonds. The treasury raised a record amount of 5.7 billion.
But due to the declining interest rates in recent years, there was less and less interest in the bonds, the last issue now dates from March 2019. A government bond with a ten-year term then had an interest rate of 0.55 percent and brought just under 4 million. euros in the hands of the government.
