State and Local Officials Urge Jim Jordan to Cancel Hearing on NYC Violent Crime and Alvin Bragg

More than 20 state and local officials sent a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan asking him to cancel a hearing scheduled for Monday on violent crime in the city.

That hearing will focus on Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who charged former President Donald Trump with 34 felony counts earlier this month.

Alvin Bragg’s office views this move as a meritless “political stunt” that will not affect current efforts to increase public safety.

Bragg said, “They are now prepared to continue these spiteful and orchestrated attacks on our city with a sham hearing, the very purpose of which is to undermine his own legitimate investigation into the criminal activities of Donald J. Trump,” said Bragg. fiscal.

In their emailed letter to the “Jim Jordan’s Sham NYC Hearing” panel, the New York group criticized Republican leaders for what they see as “a systematic campaign of dishonest and disrespectful attacks on the people they represent.”

The hearing comes just days after Bragg charged Trump with 34 counts related to his business practices.

It is expected to focus on the “pro-crime, anti-victim policies that have led to an increase in violent crime and a dangerous community for New York City residents,” according to a statement.

However, local lawmakers say crime in New York has improved under Bragg, saying shootings and murders have decreased.

For his part, Mayor Adams, in an interview on Friday with CNN, reiterated the same argument and called instead for federal gun reform.

“It’s just unfortunate that at a time like this they use taxpayer money to stage a farce like this,” he said.

They also labeled the rhetoric of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other Republican lawmakers like Georgia’s Marjorie Taylor Greene… as a smear attack on New York City.

It is not clear if any NYC officials will be at the hearing or if they will meet with Republican congressmen.
