Start the DASH Diet with Fasting for Maximum Results

JAKARTA Diet DASH help people with metabolic syndrome improve high blood pressure and the results will be better, if the diet is started with fasting .

Reporting from The Health Site, Monday (5/4) a study recently published in the journal Nature Communications concluded that switching to the DASH diet can improve blood pressure and this effect is strengthened, if the diet begins with fasting.

In the study, volunteers with metabolic syndrome followed the DASH (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension) diet for three months. This Mediterranean-style diet includes eating lots of fruit and vegetables, whole grain products, nuts and beans, fish and lean white meat, while eliminating foods and drinks that are high in salt, fatty, and sugary.

During fasting, the composition of the gut bacteria ecosystem changes drastically and the bacteria that help reduce blood pressure are doubled. Some of these changes persisted even as they continued to eat food, the researchers said.

Compared to other groups, volunteers who started a healthy diet with five days of fasting also had lower body mass index, blood pressure and the need for antihypertensive drugs remained low in the long term.

“Fasting acts as a catalyst for protective microorganisms in the intestine. Health is clearly improving very rapidly, and patients can cut back on their medication or even stop taking tablets frequently, “said Dr. Sofia Forslund, who led the research group.
