The Austrian Fistball League will start a shortened season this coming weekend. The championship titles for women and men are awarded four weeks later. The 2nd Bundesliga will be held this year as the “League Cup”.
The start of the season in the Bundesliga fistball was originally planned for May. For the first time, an all-year championship should be held beginning in spring and the finals in autumn. Instead, there will only be a shortened field season this year. The preliminary rounds in the 1st national leagues of women and men are played in two groups. Cross games between the top placed form the semi-final pairings. The finals will not be played in a Final3 tournament as usual, but decentralized. The 2nd Bundesliga takes place in the form of a “League Cup”. Promotions and relegations in the national leagues will be suspended this year.
“We tried to find the right balance in a difficult and uncertain time. Our top priority is to protect the health of the players and everyone involved. But it was also important to us to find a practicable mode for hosting the 1st Bundesliga. This year, too, there should be an Austrian national champion and the chance to qualify for international competitions, ”explains Faustball Austria President Gerhard Zeller.
The top teams from last season are among the favorites again this year. Urfahr wants to successfully defend the men’s title against a group of fellow favorites – led by Vöcklabruck and Freistadt. In the case of women, Urfahr and Laakirchen in particular hope to break Master Nussbach’s dominance.
