Construction work on the redesign of the theater park in Rheydt will start in mid-January. The redesign of the park is a sub-project of the urban development funding program Social City Rheydt and specifically addresses families and different user groups. “With a completely new quality of stay, we want to offer the Rheydtern in the inner city a new point of contact, which can be used by all Rheydtern not only in the summer months but also all year round. With a coherent planting concept, the park should offer a high quality of stay all year round ”, says City Director and Technical Assistant Dr. Gregor Bonin. In addition, the theater will also benefit from these plans. “With the theater as a main user, the framework conditions for parties have been agreed. The theater park will expand the cultural offerings in Rheydt and offer cultural workers good opportunities for their program ”, said Dr. Gert Fischer. With a space for a stage and the necessary supply connections, the space can be used well for cultural outdoor events. Michael Grosse, general manager at Theater Krefeld / Mönchengladbach, is also looking forward to the new opportunities: “The redesign of the theater park is a beautiful and invigorating signal for the theater environment at the Rheydt location. Previous new event formats such as DER KULTURMARKT experience a sustainable consolidation and perspectives for new display formats open up. “

The theater park is intended to reflect the urban quality of life in Rheydt. With modern play areas for younger and older children as well as a calisthenics and parcours meeting point for young people, attractive seating and relaxation areas and a terrace for gastronomy, the new theater park appeals not only to families but also to other important user groups in Rheydt. In addition, a fenced dog meadow is planned in the northern area. A children’s playground with a water feature, slide, trampoline, climbing frame and swing will be the new heart of the park. These and other games are intended to encourage children and young people to explore the entire park and their own abilities. For this purpose, elements such as pedestals, boulders, tree trunks, etc. are built in to allow space for free play. The lighting in the park is being completely revised and expanded, especially on the main paths, in order to eliminate poorly lit corners and “fearful spaces”.

The citizens were closely involved in the planning process. The plans were presented at the district conference, at the open day of the support center south and a public information event. In addition, a workshop was held with employees and sponsors of the theater, in which, in addition to structural aspects, “soft” projects were developed to accompany the construction work and the subsequent “use of the park”. Different interest groups also had their say. For example, after the Hey! Rheydt activity group provided suggestions for the play area in the first draft, this draft was intensively revised again. The total costs are around 1.9 million euros, with 80 percent funding. Completion is scheduled for autumn 2021.
