start of classes in Lima postponed due to rain

Classes in Lima will begin on March 20, according to an announcement by the head of Minedu, Óscar Becerra.

After meeting with the mayor of Lima, Rafael López Aliaga, the Minister of Education (Minedu), Óscar Becerraannounced that the start of classes in the capital will be postponed until next Monday, March 20 due to the heavy rains recorded in recent days.

“The decision that we have made in consultation with the constitutional president of the Republic, with the premier, with the Senamhi team and with the management team of the Ministry of Education, is that we are going to defer the start of classes in Metropolitan Lima for one week. and Lima Region for all educational institutions”said the holder of the aforementioned portfolio before the local press.

“Senamhi has issued an alert of probable very unusual and high rainfall for the Lima area due to Cyclone Yaku (…) In Lima we are not prepared for rainfall above normal. We don’t want to create panic, but we are very unaccustomed to reacting after an emergency occurs. In this case we are doing the opposite and we want to be cautious. Hopefully all these forecasts are in vain and that it doesn’t rain as much as it seems it could happen “he added.

Besides, Becerra recommended that private educational institutions in Lima suspend their activities especially on March 13 and 14, dates, according to the forecast of the senamhiin which the most intense fluvial precipitations will be registered in the capital.

Following the minister’s statements, the Minedu published a statement on its social networks reaffirming the provisions of its owner and indicating that this measure was taken in order to safeguard the physical integrity of the students.

“The authorities of the Education sector will be in permanent evaluation of the educational premises, in coordination with the Civil Defense authorities, the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima and local governments”reads the statement.

It should be noted that, as a result of the intense rains that are being recorded in a large part of the national territory as a result of the Cyclone Yaku (being the most affected regions the north coast and highlands of the country), the start of classes was also postponed in Tumbes, Piura, La Libertad, Lambayeque and Ancash.
