Start: Gazprom starts supplying gas to Europe on the new Turkish Stream route

Ukraine today called on the United States and the European Union to impose sanctions on the company, accusing it of using energy as a weapon and depriving Kiev of supplies

Russia’s gas holding company Gazprom announced today that it has started supplying gas to Hungary and Croatia via a new route through the Turkish Stream gas pipeline and then through the national gas transmission systems of Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary, TASS and Reuters reported.

The deliveries on this route became possible thanks to the construction of the new main gas pipeline of the Hungarian gas operator FGSZ on the territory of Hungary and the completion of the expansion of the national gas transmission systems in Bulgaria and Serbia, where the operators Bulgartransgaz EAD and GAZTRANZ Novi GASTRANS doo Novi Sad) have activated the compressor stations, it is said in the announcement.

As of today, Gazprom began supplying gas to Hungary under a long-term contract with Budapest, signed on September 27th, via the Balkan Stream gas pipeline (a continuation of the Turkish Stream) and pipelines in Southeast Europe. The document consists of two contracts for a total volume of up to 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year for a period of 15 years.

Ukraine today called on the United States and the European Union to impose sanctions on Gazprom, accusing it of using energy as a weapon because of transit gas supplies to Hungary, depriving Kiev of supplies, Reuters reported. This deprives Ukraine of transit revenues and means that it will no longer be able to reverse import gas through Hungary, as it has been doing since 2015 as a way to buy gas directly from Russia.

Due to the cessation of gas imports from Hungary in reverse mode, Ukraine will be forced to replace it with gas from Poland, Romania and Slovakia. This was stated today by the director of relations with state bodies and international organizations of the gas transmission system operator of Ukraine Olga Belkova, quoted by TASS.
