Expiry of the US primaries 2020: How do “Primary” and “Caucus” work?

In most of the states of the USA the primaries are held as “Primary”. “Primaries” are similar to normal elections, are organized by the states and are often only open to voters who have registered for a party. In some states, voters from one party can also vote in other parties.

Some states hold the primaries as “caucuses”. A “caucus” is a local vote organized by the respective party, during which there are also discussions and lectures. In both forms, the voters ultimately nominate electors who are supposed to vote for the respective candidate at the party congresses.
