Starsky and Hutch Actor David Soul Dies at 80: Family Confirms

American actor David Soul, who played Hutch in the 1970s series ‘Starsky and Hutch’, died on Thursday, January 4, at the age of 80, his wife, Helen Snell, reported this Friday.

Soul, whose real name was David Richard Solberg, was born in Chicago and acquired British nationality in 2004.

“A much-loved husband, father, grandfather and brother, he passed away yesterday after a brave battle to continue living, surrounded by the love of his family,” Helen Snell, the actor’s fifth wife, said in a statement.

“His smile, his laugh and his passion for life will be remembered by the many people he met,” added Helen Snell.

“He shared his extraordinary gifts as an actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend with the world and his smile and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he touched,” he added.

In the series ‘Starsky and Hutch’, broadcast for 92 weeks in the United States between 1975 and May 1979, David Soul acted alongside Paul Michael Glaser, forming the famous couple of police detectives, who moved in the also legendary Ford Grand Red Torino with a white stripe. Before the series, he had his film debut with the film ‘Johnny Got His Gun’.

In 2004, a feature film was made from the series ‘Starsky and Hutch’. Owen Wilson played the role played by David Soul 30 years earlier and Ben Stiller took over the role of Paul Michael Glaser. He also participated in other series such as ‘My Beautiful Genius’, ‘Here Comes The Brides’ and ‘Star Trek’.

Parallel to his performance as an actor, taking advantage of the success of the series, he launched a musical career as a singer, recording five albums, with songs such as ‘Don’t give up on us’, in 1977, which became number one in United Kingdom.

Soul’s death has left a great void for the film industry, since he became an icon for the world of entertainment, which is why many actors have spoken out after his departure.
