Stars of Styria 2021 – WKO.at

A total of 14,197 young people are currently completing an apprenticeship in Styria. 4,671 girls and boys started an apprenticeship this year on August 31st in Styria. That is 5.9 percent more than last year – a gratifying development!

In the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld region, 1,251 completed an apprenticeship in the previous year, with training in 434 companies. The best graduates, together with their training companies, are named STARS OF STYRIA – powered by Raiffeisen, Uniqa and Energie Steiermark – by the WKO Styria.

The young skilled workers form the backbone for an economically powerful region and are in great demand even in times of Corona. According to the AMS, 2,015 vacant apprenticeship positions were registered in Styria at the end of August, compared to only 1,489 apprenticeship seekers. One of the main reasons for this discrepancy is demographic development. “Because of them, only half as many young people are entering the job market today as in the 1970s.”, WKO regional office chairman Ing. Herbert Spitzer knows, because in 1979 the number of 15-year-olds was still 22,413 and currently one counts in the green Mark only 11,250 young people in this age group. “We must no longer lose young people here as dropouts. That is why we at the WKO have also launched the Talent Center. More than 8,000 young people between the ages of 13 and 15 use this offer every year and the capacities have already been expanded Girls should be excited here. With metal technology and electronics, there are already two such professions among the ten most common apprenticeships for girls, something that was unthinkable a few years ago. It is important to continue on this path. The apprenticeship with or after the Matura should also be pushed. And last but not least, professional orientation must not go under in times of Corona – it’s a shame when trial days fall victim to it! ”

The fact that the staging of EuroSkills on the last weekend of September in Graz and Premstätten caused euphoria among the participants and visitors and a real rush of media, is balm for the soul in the fight against the shortage of skilled workers. “With this European vocational championship, we were able to trigger a wave of enthusiasm for vocational training among young people. That was our primary goal.” Karl-Heinz Dernoscheg, MBA, “and that of the 33 medals that Austria was able to win, 10 were cleared by Styrian participants, our state is also recognized as a top training country!”
