‘Starlink wants Isle of Man ground station for full UK coverage’ – IT Pro – News

A fair comment. For most people who can cough up such subscriptions, there are often better and cheaper alternatives.

Don’t forget that Musk wants to generate a turnover of 30 billion to fund his Mars project. That just works not, even if he sells the maximum capacity of his network.

There are a lot of problems with the revenue model of this project, the mass of space junk it produces and especially the fact that there are other providers that offer cheaper products (often without costs for setup), require fewer satellites and yes, higher latency. The latter is a selling point that Starlink insists on but where they will never compete with a fiber optic connection or other wired alternatives. That is of course not their target group, but who are those customers? And do they want Starlink or do they also want to shop with the competition that has been around for a while and has almost complete coverage? For many of those people, 500 euros is a start-up cost and 99 euros per month is too much money.

Because Starlink’s satellites fly so low, you also need a lot of them. As a result, a lot of them float over areas where no one lives (70% oceans) and at that moment they do not contribute anything to the capacity of the network. For example, Viasat has 4 satellites, but they fly higher and therefore have a very long range.

Of course, the speeds that Starlink would achieve will also be covered, but they depend just as much on the number of subscribers and the number of satellites above your area at that time. The more users + fewer satellites, the less fast…
