“This week, we will pass 4 million subscribers for Starlink,” company president Gwynne Shotwell said at a meeting of the Texas State House Appropriations Committee as reported by Techcrunch.
Starlink started providing beta services for its products in October 2020. Then the company managed to reach 1 million customers in December 2022, two million customers in September 2023, and three million purchase in May 2024.
The Starlink Internet service consists of nearly 6,000 satellites, with coverage in 100 countries for individual users as well as large corporate customers such as major airlines and shipping companies. According to industry research and consulting firm Quilty Space, the service generated $6.6 billion this year, up from about $1.4 billion just two years earlier.
Starlink is part of SpaceX’s grand plan to explore space. Although the company is still raising money from investors, CEO Elon Musk said revenue from broadband internet services will help fund further development of its reusable rocket , Starship.
In turn, making Starship a reality will help the company launch more Starlink satellites at a faster pace.
Starlink has transformed into a satellite internet giant. Since the start of the service, it has taken market share from incumbents such as Viasat and SES, which operate large satellites in higher geosynchronous orbit. Several other constellations are under development, most notably Amazon’s Kuiper Project, but have yet to begin commercial service.
