Starlink has approval for entry into Brazil postponed by ANATEL

ANATEL held a vote for Starlink to enter the Brazilian market earlier this week. For those who do not know, it is a company created by Elon Musk that uses a huge network of satellites for data transmission, allowing you to have Internet almost anywhere on the planet. Unfortunately, the decision on whether to approve Starlink’s operation in Brazil was postponed at the request of board member Emmanoel Campelo.

Anatel postpones Starlink’s entry into Brazil

Elon Musk says his main goal, when introducing the Starlink service in Brazil, is to provide access to places where there is no infrastructure for various reasons, allowing different applications. One example he cites is the ability to more effectively monitor the Amazon. Minister Fabio Faria told Elon that a semiconductor factory would be nice, but the answer was that companies would focus on unexplored markets.

During the meeting at ANATEL, adviser Vicente Aquino said he was in favor of Starlink in the Brazilian market. However, Aquino says there are caveats and that the “pioneering character [da Starlink] could involve unforeseen impacts on competition or the creation of barriers to the entry of others into this market”. That said, he proposed that licensing would not take place until March 2027.

Starlink even declared that it could immediately market its satellite broadband packages in Brazil and that ANATEL would only have to give its approval. The company expected the permit to be granted in 2022.
