After eight long years of development and many presentations, Starfield is finally out, and it looks like the head of Bethesda Game Studios, Todd Howard, wants to share his impressions. The day before, he not only sent congratulatory letters to all the employees who gave their time to the development of the game, but also addressed the press, in which he confessed with what experiences the studio created this grandiose RPG.
In the letter, he spoke with deep respect about the process of creating the game and his impressions of it, stating that he was once afraid of being too ambitious due to the fact that Starfield would never be perfect.
We are very lucky to be able to create such beloved series of games as The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. But we still couldn’t get rid of the idea of creating galactic adventures that could only be realized in a game, so we set about creating the first new IP in 25 years and the most ambitious one.
We completed the first Starfield concept art back in 2013, over 10 years ago,” Todd explained in a letter posted on Twitter.
Development started at the end of 2015 with a small team after the release of Fallout 4. Concept development, design and creation of a new technology that we dreamed of …… took much longer than we expected. By 2020, when the world was already turned upside down by the epidemic, our team has already earned its full capacity – 275 people. We had to work in a completely new way, adapting to the many changes in our lives, including the death of the founder of the company and its takeover by the Xbox division.
For a long time we thought that this game might never come true, maybe we really were too ambitious, biting too much and not chewing. The development process is never straight forward, it is often tortuous and dangerous. I am incredibly proud that the team has shown passion and dedication to create something truly special.
Todd then thanked the development and localization team, and on behalf of everyone at Bethesda thanked the reviewers for taking the time to play Starfield and share their ideas with the world: “We are touched and honored.” In the last paragraph, he wrote:
The creation of Starfield was one of the most challenging and exciting experiences of our career, a process we will never forget, and now that our mission has reached its final chapter, we are handing over the baton to you to begin the real journey, and we hope that Starfield it was worth it.
Todd Howard has spoken in the past about the bumpy development process for Starfield. More recently, he said that the game only became really interesting in the seventh year of development, which is quite late even by gaming standards. Discussing Starfield’s gameplay, Todd stated, “I thought we’d find out about it sooner.”
