At 2am today, players from Europe were able to launch Starfield for the first time. One of the most ambitious games of the year has opened its doors to all those who secured early access, which will last until September 6. Then the action RPG from Bethesda will officially be released and available to anyone. As expected, there has been a lot of interest in the game, and following the first reviews that appeared early yesterday, there is a lively debate over the story, individual aspects of the game or the technical state. There seems to be no unequivocal opinion on anything, and players and journalists are often quite divided in their views on Starfield.
Let’s start with a popular metric – that is, the number of players who started playing the night before. We can draw data from Steam – via SteamDB – where 234,502 people have played Starfield at one point so far. But build this one performance in contrast to, for example, Baldur’s Gate III, it may not be very convincing, if we consider that the game from Bethesda is available in Game Pass and many players will very likely play it through subscription. Over 130,000 players currently continue to play Starfield on Steam, and it’s almost certain that weekend numbers will only grow.
As for the rating, on the aggregator Metacritic it has for now PC verze Starfield 88 points and pro version Xbox Series one point less. In the reviews, the highest marks are given, such as from the GamesRadar or VGC portals, but there was also a rating of 7/10, which is so far the lowest of the portals that publish their ratings on Metacritic. It is most often said that Starfield is a huge game in which players can easily drown hundreds of hours, and the advantage should be the possibility to become basically anyone you want As for the criticism, it is directed mainly at the technical condition on computers, the boring exploration of individual planets and, for example, according to PC Gamer, it does not reach the qualities of Skyrim or Fallout 4.
PC players don’t have to worry about the absence of other upscalers in the game, because there are already modifications that add DLSS and XeSS from Intel to Starfield.
Another topic that is addressed in connection with Starfield is the absence of DLSS. A few weeks ago, when Bethesda’s partnership with AMD was confirmed, it was revealed that the game would not use an upscaler from Nvidia, and the developers have not yet confirmed whether the situation will change in the future. PC gamers don’t have to worry too much though, because there are already modifications that Intel’s DLSS and XeSS add to Starfield. Directly on the portal pages Nexus Mods in the section dedicated to Starfield there are several interesting mods, including Starfield Upscaleru or perhaps a mod that adds control icons corresponding to the PlayStation controller to the game. But of course there is much more to it, and as you can see, the players in the first hours solved it with the help of mods, for example broken FOV or removing hit indicators from the game interface.
However, if we were to return to the technical state of the game, the developers at Bethesda will probably be busy in the coming days. Players on Steam, where the title will be available for review until September 6th, use discussions to comment on the game and often mention the game crashing in the last hours. It is supposed to happen right after character creation on some computer configurations, but this is not the only technical problem. For example, one player points out that the game does not fully utilize the graphics card, at least not as much as other recent titles, and yet the performance is not smooth. In an extensive thread with more than 100 answers, the overall performance of the game and the lack of optimization are addressed, and a while ago they also started talking about the lack of rights games in Windows that prevent the creation of a folder with a saved position, or saving the game as such. Of course, there are a lot of players who, on the contrary, are very satisfied and got exactly what they expected – a game from Bethesda that plays like… Well, just like a game from Bethesda.
We will focus on Starfield in the coming days, and of course the extended stream will come first.
