Bethesda Softworks is one of the very few major publishers that still bothers with boxed versions of PC games. Even even after the company was bought by Microsoft, Bethesda did not cancel this pleasant habitas evidenced by the recently released vampire action Redfall or the upcoming sci-fi RPG Starfield. But if you buy the box, naturally you will only find the Steam activation key in it. And now it seems that, at least in the case of Starfield, the Xbox Series X|S boxed versions will be the same.
Source: Bethesda Starfield is supposed to be a modder’s paradise, unsurprisingly
Leccos has already hinted at the fact that in the collector’s edition of Starfield, called Constellation Edition, you will find a label with an engraved key instead of a game disc. And yesterday, Bethesda’s support Twitter account, in response to a question from one of the players, said that all physical editions of the game include a key for the chosen platform. So there is no disc in them.
It should be noted that the tweet was soon deleted, but nothing is hidden on the internetand so here we have, for example, a screenshot to which pointed out British Eurogamer. We can, however, question whether this is a legitimate Bethesda customer support Twitter account, whether the author of the tweet was not only referring to PC, and why the message was deleted. But the account name definitely looks correct, the possibility that everything refers only to PC boxes is ruled out by words about the chosen platformand the removal of the tweet is probably simply related to the fact that someone here revealed something that was not yet the right time.
Naturally, some fans and most fans of physical media and the idea of owning or archiving video games don’t like this news too well. But naturally we have here opinions that the disc in the box doesn’t matter when nowadays you almost always need to download some additional data after inserting the disc into the console drive, so you can play at all. We can also find the PC version in the current HW requirements requirement for 125 GB of free space on the SSDso it can be assumed that even on Xbox, Starfield will not be a small thing that could easily fit on a physical medium.
Although everything should be taken with a grain of salt for now, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S owners planning to buy the boxed version of Starfield should in any case be prepared to find no disc in the box. So we officially welcome them to the world of PC gamers. With the difference that on PC, except for Bethesda and EA, all the big publishers cough up some more regular release of boxed sets. And as it seems, we may just be experiencing the dawn of an age where physical media as such will begin to be coughed up across platforms.
