The head of development also hinted at the possible appearance of a survival mode.

Starfield Game Director Todd Howard shared details about the game’s development during the Game Maker’s Notebook podcast. He said his team spent a lot of time getting the space battles right. According to Howard, this turned out to be more difficult than Bethesda initially expected, including due to features regarding the difficulty of battles.
The head of development said that his team first made the AI of ships in Starfield very smart. This was not difficult, but later they abandoned this decision, since in this case the battles would not be exciting.
It turned out that we needed to make the AI very stupid. Enemy ships should fly, and then turn to the player and seem to suggest: “Hey, player, why don’t you shoot me a little?” Once we figured out the tempo and movement of the enemies, everything worked immediately.
Todd Howard, Starfield Game Director
While working on space battles, Howard was inspired, among other things, by the game FTL: Faster Than Light from the studio Subset Games. In particular, he liked how the energy distribution system was implemented in it. A similar mechanic eventually appeared in Starfield, where players must manually determine which ship components should receive buffs. Howard also admitted that he likes the old MechWarrior games, in which the pace of battles is much slower.
During the conversation, the game director also recalled that initially the exploration of planets in Starfield was much more difficult. Thus, players had to pay more attention to how the environment affected the character and his suit, as well as take into account resistance to various effects such as radiation or thermal radiation.

However, testing showed that it was difficult for players to understand such a system. As a result, the developers decided to simplify it by abandoning some aspects. However, there are still negative effects in the game that players need to treat with medication or with doctors.
Howard reported that at one stage of testing at Starfield, spacesuits with different resistances appeared that were suitable for use on planets with different threats. As planned, players would have to change equipment depending on the location. This idea was also abandoned, but, as the game director noted, the developers may have to solve this problem in the future.
Published by IGN counted, that by doing so Howard hinted at the appearance of a “hardcore” mode in the game. Bethesda has previously released similar updates after the release of its games. So, in Fallout 4, survival mode appeared a few months after its release.
As of late September, only two small patches have been released for Starfield, but Bethesda is actively working on a major update. Among other things, it should add support for DLSS image scaling technology. Previously, unofficial compatibility with this technology in Starfield was provided by a developer under the nickname PureDark, who then threatened to strengthen the protection in his mods so that they would not be used by “pirates.”
