Starbucks Sued for Alleged Human Rights Violations in Coffee and Tea Sourcing

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Starbucks sued on charges of lying to the public regarding the source of coffee and tea allegedly from plantations that violate human rights (HAM).

The National Consumers League took issue with Starbucks’ claims of commitment to 100 percent ethical sourcing of coffee and tea. The lawsuit was registered in Washington DC Court, United States (US) on Wednesday (10/1) local time.

“With every bag of coffee and every box of K-cups on store shelves, Starbucks is telling consumers lies,” said National Consumers League CEO Sally Greenberg, quoted from CNNThursday (11/1).

“The facts are clear. There are significant human and labor rights violations throughout Starbucks’ supply chain,” he stressed.

They accused Starbucks of taking coffee and tea beans from plantations that violate human rights. These violations include forced labor, child labor, and sexual harassment.

Greenberg took the example of the case in Brazil in 2022. In that country, a Starbucks supplier was reported on charges of slavery and even illegal trafficking of more than 30 migrant workers.

A Starbucks spokesperson said the company would fight the allegations.

“We take allegations like this very seriously and actively engage with farms to ensure they comply with our standards,” Starbucks said.

“Every supply chain must undergo regular re-verification. We remain committed to working with our business partners to meet the expectations detailed in our global human rights statement,” continued the company.
