Jakarta –
Starbucks in the United States (US) was asked to reopen 23 of its stores which were closed last year. Starbucks accused of deliberately closing the outlet to prevent its employees from joining a labor union.
In this regard, the union accused Starbucks of carrying out illegal tactics. Representatives of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) said eight Starbucks stores had joined the union when they closed.
Quoted from ReutersFriday (15/12/2023), workers at more than 360 of the 9,300 Starbucks stores in the US chose to join a union in 2021. The coffee shop is said to be facing more than 100 complaints at the NLRB over alleged attempts to disband the union.
However, Starbucks denied any wrongdoing and said it respected workers’ rights. Starbucks claims it allows its employees to unionize.
In a statement on Thursday, Starbucks explained that it conducts annual reviews of its stores and routinely makes changes for a variety of valid reasons.
“This includes opening new locations, identifying stores that require investment or renovation, exploring locations where alternative formats are needed and, in some cases, reevaluating our footprint,” the company explained.
As for before, Starbucks is said to have closed 23 outlets without notifying Workers United, the union behind the campaign. The company is also said to have not given the union the opportunity to negotiate.
