Star was only in the Marvel flop for the money

Most Hollywood actors have one or two works in their filmographies that they would like to undo. “Morbius” is probably such a work.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) has given us a number of films in recent years that have clearly divided their audience: These include “Venom” and, most recently, “Madame Web”. However, no SSU film divided critics and viewers as noticeably as „Morbius“ from 2022. While critics criticized him Rotten Tomatoes with 15 % extremely punishing, viewers were able to gain a lot from the film, which influenced the rating of 71 % proves.

The cast of “Morbius” includes Jared Leto (“Requiem for a Dream”), Matt Smith (“House of the Dragon”) and Jared Harris (“Chernobyl”). It can probably be said that “Morbius” is not exactly one of the showcase works of the stars’ respective filmographies. In fact, in addition to “Chernobyl,” Harris can really show off many roles, such as “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Sherlock Holmes,” as well as the series “Mad Men” and “The Crown,” for which he was nominated for an Emmy was nominated. So “Morbius” is more of an outlier. In fact, Harris, the son of the first Albus Dumbledore actor Richard Harris (“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”), revealed that “Morbius” was more about the acting fee for him. He reported this to the British newspaper i:

“I had a mortgage to pay. Sometimes you say yes to things because you have to make money.”

That’s what went wrong with “Morbius,” according to Jared Harris

When asked why he thought the Marvel film failed, Harris replied the following:

“I have observed that these types of films work well if you have a sense of humor. You can’t treat it like it’s a Shakespeare play. So yes, this film could have used a mischievous sense of humor.”

Matt Smith also commented on this in 2022 Rolling Stone UK on the defeat of “Morbius”:

“And, [der Film] was thrown to the sharks. But you just have to accept it. What else should you do? It’s a movie, at the end of the day we’re not going to save lives. For whatever reason, it didn’t quite work out and… it is what it is.”

You can currently stream “Morbius” with a membership on Joyn PLUS+. By the way, there are two more SSU films coming to the cinema this year: First up is “Venom: The Last Dance” on October 24th, followed by “Kraven the Hunter” on December 12th.
