Star Wars Unlimited could be the next big thing in the trading card genre. The information known so far at least suggests that Fantasy Flight Games wants to work on many of the letters. The plan for the content until 2027 is in place – the official Star Wars canon is used.
Little details about Star Wars Unlimited keep leaking out. Fantasy Flight Games had already presented the big plans for the coming years in detail, so fans could at least roughly classify the content. FFG product boss Jim Cartwright had already said what many had hoped: the makers were allowed to make full use of the license.
Classic start, then surprises
Star Wars Unlimited will go on sale in the first week of March 2024, initially as a pre-release product with some goodies, then officially with starter packs, boosters and displays. The first set is entitled “Spark of Rebellion” – the name suggests what it will be about: the finest Star Wars classics about Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Darth Vader. Star Wars Unlimited starts with the classic trilogy, the Galactic Civil War and thus in the period from the original three films, but also the animated series Star Wars: Rebels and the prequel film Rogue One.
However, it has long been known how things will continue step by step. With “Shadows of the Galaxy” and “Twilight of the Republic” – there will be three waves of content each year. Exactly what content fans can expect is still unclear, at least for the period from the second wave onwards. However, sales vice president Davide Bonati of Fantasy Flight Games told the website Dicebreaker that the first three sets would cover the content that most Star Wars fans would be familiar with. This is a detail that illustrates Fantasy Flight Games’ clever distribution strategy for Star Wars Unlimited: They focus, especially at launch, on content that not only die-hard Star Wars fans can relate to. The barrier to entry decreases, but the motivation to perhaps take a look increases.
However, one thing is clear: This will not be the case with every wave, because the more topics Fantasy Flight Games processes for the trading card game, the deeper you will have to delve into the subject of Star Wars. Bonati also confirms that you can basically access all content from the modern Star Wars world. “Modern” in this case means: content from the official canon. As is well known, the so-called Expanded Universe is not one of them, so Kyle Katarn and Co will not appear – as of now.
However, Disney’s tough and controversial content strategy in recent years has benefited the trading card game. Characters and stories from films, television series, comics as well as video games and other areas are accessible – and now offer a lot of fodder for fans. According to Davide Bonati, the trading card game benefits from the illustration style, which allows content from different formats to be easily combined. This means that scenes from audio books, animated series or even computer games such as the Star Wars Jedi trilogy can be adapted for Star Wars Unlimited.
And another detail is quite interesting: Fantasy Flight Games is expressly allowed to submit ideas to Lucasfilm. Adapted characters would not be ruled out – as is the case with the various versions of the Disney characters from Ravensburger’s Disney Lorcana trading card game.
The plans for Star Wars Unlimited extend far into the future. The strategy for new content has been defined until 2027.
