Star Wars Outlaws: This is what the game is about
In Star Wars: Outlaws, the player takes on the role of Kay Vess, a villain who, in exchange for money and favors, does many jobs for cartels such as the Pyke Syndicate, the Ashiga Clan, or the Crimson Dawn that others refuse. Her ability to infiltrate undetected is often required. The way she does this is up to the player. True to the motto: “No survivors means no witnesses.” But you also have to be prepared for fierce firefights.
At Kay’s side is always her animal companion “Nix”, who resembles an oversized axolotl and to whom the player can give commands to manipulate objects (including activating the self-destruction of enemy blasters) or to distract them.
The gamescom demo included three missions, of which we were able to test “False Flag” and “The Relic”.
False Flag
In this mission we start directly at the end of another mission. The computer of an empirical station has been tampered with and we now have to escape. To do this we have to activate the hangar’s evacuation protocol and authorize the departure of an “organic cargo”. Despite the evacuation we still come across some stormtroopers in the hangar and have to keep them at bay, or rather we have to survive until our colleague has extended the loading ramp of our ship, the “Trailblazer”. Having escaped from the hangar, we now have to shoot down the Tie Fighters that have been sent out and then clear our own “wanted” status at a relay station. The controls on the station were acceptable with the Xbox controller, but we would have preferred a mouse and keyboard, especially in the exchanges of fire. The controller controls worked better in the spaceship battle.
The Relic
The various organizations are always trying to play one another off, and when two fight, the villain is happy. In this mission, we have to break into the headquarters of the Crimson Dawn and recover a valuable relic of the Ashiga clan. We are of course turned away at the main entrance, but we quickly find a clichéd open ventilation shaft through which we can gain access. Just a few corridors further on, we come to a kind of museum hall with various captured objects, which are presented like trophies in glass display cases. Our goal, the relic, is protected by an energy field for which we first need an access card from one of the soldiers. Here, the aim is to lure away the individual soldiers and droids undetected with the help of Nix and eliminate them until their number is small enough for a confrontation. After successfully neutralizing the guards and the energy field, we have to escape back out the same way and mingle with the residents of the city to get to our client. Here too, controlling a stealth shooter with a controller is more a matter of taste, but it was implemented quite well in the demo.
The game’s environment seems very lively, in the city you can overhear trivial conversations and always see a lot of activity going on around you. The guards within the headquarters talk and gossip with each other, providing a nice sense of immersion in the world.
