Since her breakthrough with “Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens,” Daisy Ridley has played some interesting roles outside of the sci-fi saga. She even thought of one of them herself – see the trailer for the intense “Magpie” here:
The neo-noir thriller “Magpie” comes from the imagination of Daisy Ridley, known as Rey from the “Star Wars” universe. While filming her “The Awakening of the Huntress,” which was released in January 2024, the Brit had the original idea for the story, which was partly set on a film set.
While Ridley was still busy recording, her husband, actor Tom Bateman (“Death on the Nile”), began working on the idea into a script back home in England. According to an interview, films such as “Gone Girl”, “A Fatal Affair”, but also “Tully” served as inspiration. When the couple finally finished the script, they decided to produce the film based on it themselves.
Ridley and Bateman then hired the well-known theater director Sam Yates for the production, making his feature film debut. Yates cited Michael Haneke’s “Caché” as well as the Stanley Kubrick geniuses “Shining” and “Eyes Wide Shut” as major influences for his work on the project.
“Magpie” had its world premiere in March of this year at the South By Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas. The film will now open in US cinemas nationwide on October 25, 2024. When and how “Magpie” will come to Germany is still unclear.
In addition to Daisy Ridley, who plays the leading role, the other big parts include Shazad Latif from “Star Trek: Discovery” and Matilda Lutz from the Netflix thriller “Reptile”. Lutz already filmed the title role in the fantasy actioner “Red Sonja” last year. It is also still unclear when the remake of the cult 1980s film with Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger will come to our cinemas.
“Magpie”: That’s the story
The successful writer Ben (Latif) and his wife Anette (Ridley) lead a comfortable, privileged life with their two children. Little Matilda (Hiba Ahmed) is cast for a role in a film production. While Anette stays at home to look after the baby, Ben travels to filming with his daughter.
There he meets the glamorous film star Alicia (Lutz), whose daughter Matilda is supposed to play. Sparks immediately fly between Ben and Alicia and the two quickly become closer. While Anette’s strenuous everyday life alone with the baby threatens to get to her head at home, she finds out about Alicia’s alleged new lover on a gossip website and loses her nerve…
