Disney and Lucasfilm, owners of the Star Wars brand, presented a few days ago the future plans for the galactic franchise, which will add four new television series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew; but that will leave parked, at least for now, his return to the big screen.
After the immense success of The Mandalorianthe fiction that became the flagship of the Disney + platform, the studio has launched a hasty race to launch fictions set in the universe that George Lucas inaugurated in 1977.
The lucrative franchise celebrates these days the Star Wars Celebrationan event organized in southern California that brings together thousands of fans of the saga to exchange all kinds of pieces, collectibles and costumes, and meet, first-hand, some of those responsible for this entertainment factory.
Among the novelties, a main course arrives with the return of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobithe character who became one of the favorites for the legion of followers of Star Wars.
After The Mandalorian and after the premiere -more discreet- of The Book of Boba Fett, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series will try to engage the public with a plot that Disney has kept under wraps and that took up a large part of the studio’s presentation.
“It’s more of a long film than a series, but it has its own essence and both the director (Deborah Chow) and I are very happy with the result,” said the Scottish interpreter.
Later, at the end of August, another actor from the universe Star Wars will unleash his character with his own fiction: Andor, starring the Mexican Diego Luna, who played Cassian Andor in Rogue One (2016).
“Diego Luna embodies Cassian in a truly incredible way,” said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, introducing the actor onstage at the convention, where he was enthusiastically greeted by hundreds of people.
“They will not recognize the character at the beginning of the series, it is very selfish,” Luna said before the production trailer was shown, which will consist of 12 initial chapters and has already confirmed another batch of 12 additional episodes.
Another of the great novelties was the confirmation that the British Jude Law will lead the cast of another television fiction set in Star Wars and starring four children who are lost in the galactic universe.
In the series, titled Star Wars: Skeleton Crewwill work heavyweights of commercial cinema such as Jon Watts and Chris Ford, responsible for the blockbuster Spider-Man: Homecoming (2021), and John Favreau, director of the new version of The Lion King (2019).
The filming of this bet will begin this year and is scheduled to be released in 2023, when viewers will also know the result of Ahsokaa format derived from The Mandalorian and that will star Rosario Dawson, an American actress of Puerto Rican and Cuban origin.
The Mandalorian, for its part, it will launch its third season next year.
For Christmas 2023
Despite the list of titles presented, neither Lucasfilm (producer of Star Wars) nor Disney (owner of the rights) advanced details about the future of the brand on the big screen.
The saga has a premiere reserved for Christmas 2023, according to the most recent plans of the studio, which, however, has not decided what will be the first story that will storm theaters after the end of the original film franchise, which consisted of new movies released between 1977 and 2019.
At first the rumors pointed to Star Wars: Rogue Squadrondirected by the person in charge of Wonder Woman, Patty Jenkinsbut the company acknowledged that the film was not yet ready.
There are three other projects in the pipeline, possibly directed by Taika Waititi, Rian Johnson and Kevin Feige, but none with a view to materializing in the near future.
